Slaying the Green Monster
Two old friends embark on a weekend adventure while trying to make sense of their respective troubled marriages.
When I describe Lonnie and his recent problems, it wouldn’t evoke much sympathy. Lonnie’s an opportunist and a lazy hedonist when pursuing women he desired and wanted to impress. His false flattery and sleazy track record was consistent. He was now on his third marriage and barely hanging on to a kind, wonderful, supportive spouse. His swagger and compulsions blinded him from appreciating Susan, who radiated warmth and soul. What a fool. Lonnie told me that his father had acted the same way and was compelled to outdo Dad in blazing a self destructive trail.
The flip side: Lonnie’s been a trusted friend since childhood and I value loyalty, probably to my own detriment. To cut to the chase, he screwed things up once again.
